What is Wegovy UK?
Wegovy is a weight loss injection used to lose and maintain a healthy weight. It contains the active ingredient semaglutide, which works in the same way as a natural hormone we produce that makes us feel full after eating. Wegovy is proven to be effective when taken alongside a diet and exercise plan that involves eating fewer calories and choosing healthier food options. Wegovy UK
Who is eligible for Wegovy?
To be eligible for a Wegovy prescription, you must meet certain criteria of either:
A BMI of 30 or higher
A BMI of 27 or higher if you also have a pre-existing medical condition that is affected by your weight, such as cardiovascular disease or high blood pressure
Wegovy UK, is not suitable for everyone. You should not take Wegovy if you are:
Allergic to Wegovy’s ingredients
pregnant, or planning to become pregnant
breastfeeding
If you are considering requesting treatment for Wegovy and have pancreas or heart problems, your doctor will assess whether Wegovy is suitable for you and your medical conditions, and if so, provide a prescription. Wegovy UK
How does Wegovy work for weight loss?
Wegovy contains semaglutide, a man-made version of a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), that reduces appetite and increases the feeling of fullness. After eating, our bodies release this hormone to help regulate blood sugar levels and to signal the brain that we’re full. By mimicking this hormone, Wegovy gives you the same feeling of being full and satisfied when eating less food. Wegovy UK
You’ll be advised to follow a healthy diet and adopt regular exercise by your doctor in order for you to get the most out of Wegovy.
How to take Wegovy
Wegovy is injected under the skin once a week with or without food. You should try to take it at the same time each week. Each Wegovy pen has 4 doses and lasts for 4 weeks of treatment, then you’ll need to start a new pen.
Always double-check you have the correct dose prescribed and have the right medication before injecting, if you also use other injectable medications. Wegovy UK
Please note that the Wegovy 7.2mg dose is administered slightly differently. Each dose comes available to inject in its own pre-filled single-use pen containing the full 7.2 mg dose. You will use and discard one pen each week for four weeks. Follow the instructions of your doctor through the message in your account if you ordered with us, or the online patient information leaflet. Wegovy UK
Taking your Wegovy injection
Ensure you read the Wegovy patient information leaflet for full instructions and diagrams, and follow any additional doctor’s advice. The steps below are a general guide and do not replace this information. Wegovy UK
1) Check the name and dose of your Wegovy pen to ensure it matches your prescription request, and check that it is the right medication and dose.
2) Remove the pen cap and check that the liquid is clear and colourless.
3) Use a new needle for each weekly dose.
4) Attach and secure the needle.
5) Remove the outer and inner needle cap, and perform a flow check of the pen as per the leaflet instructions (this only needs to be done when using the pen for the first time).
6) Set the dose on your pen by turning the dose selector until the correct dose is showing.
7) Select your skin injection site (such as the thigh or abdomen).
8) Insert the needle into the skin at a straight angle, as shown in the diagram in the patient information leaflet. You should be able to see the dose counter.*
9) Remove the needle and carefully replace the outer needle cap.
10) Unscrew the needle and dispose of the 2 together in a sharps bin.
11) If there are still doses left in your pen, place the pen cap back on, and safely store it for future use.
12) Log your Wegovy dose so you remember when your last dose was.
13) Set a reminder for your next dose, Wegovy is best taken at the same time each week.
*Wegovy 7.2mg dose is taken slightly differently. It is available in pre-filled single-use pens containing the full 7.2 mg dose. We have more detailed information and instructions on taking it on our dedicated Wegovy 7.2mg page.

Wegovy comes in 6 dosages. You’ll start at the lowest dose, unless you’re switching from another weight loss injection, such as Mounjaro – in this case, you may start at a higher dose depending on what dose you were taking of the previous injection. Whatever dose you start on, you’ll work your way up every 4 weeks or more to the maximum dose.

Alternative weight loss medication
There are a range of weight loss medications available in the form of injection or tablet:
Wegovy pill
Wegovy is also available in the form of a pill. The Wegovy pill works in a very similar way to the Wegovy injection, it contains the same active ingredient semaglutide and it is the first GLP-1 tablet available in the UK on prescription. Just like the Wegovy injection, the Wegovy pill works to lower your cravings by making you feel fuller for longer.
Unlike the Wegovy injection that is injected once weekly, the Wegovy pill is taken once daily on an empty stomach after 8 hours of fasting, so first thing when you wake up and 30 minutes before eating or drinking anything else. For more information, check out our dedicated page. Wegovy UK
Can I switch from Wegovy injection to Wegovy pill?
Yes, you can switch from the Wegovy injection to the Wegovy pill. You would first need to speak to your doctor and they will recommend a suitable dose to switch to. Find out more information on switching from Wegovy injection to the Wegovy pill in our guide.
Here is an overview of other prescription and over-the-counter alternative weight loss medications that do not contain semaglutide and are available in the UK, including:
1. Mounjaro is an approved weight loss injection that’s taken once a week. It contains tirzepatide, which mimics 2 hormones rather than 1. It still works in a similar way to Wegovy.
2. Nevolat is another injectable weight loss pen taken once a day rather than once a week. It contains the active ingredient liraglutide, which belongs to the same group of medications as semaglutide and works in the same way.
3. Orlistat 120mg capsules contain the active ingredient orlistat and should be taken during or up to an hour after eating. Orlistat works by preventing your body from absorbing dietary fat, which instead leaves your body in your stools. It works best if you eat foods that contain less than 30% fat, but is only effective for foods that contain some amount of fat. You can also find orlistat under the branded name Xenical.
4. Alli or Orlos is a weight loss tablet that contains 60mg of orlistat. They work in the same way as orlistat but contain a lower dose. Either can be used if you have a BMI of 28 or above.
5. Mysimba tablets for weight loss also work on appetite suppression like Wegovy, but in a slightly different way. The active ingredients in Mysimba are naltrexone and bupropion hydrochloride. They are thought to work on the control centres in your brain responsible for energy and hunger levels, making you feel less hungry and reducing cravings. Wegovy UK

What is the difference between Wegovy and Ozempic?
Ozempic and Wegovy are the same medication but they are used to treat different health conditions. Ozempic is used to improve blood sugar levels in adults who have type 2 diabetes, whereas Wegovy is used for weight loss. Both medications contain the same active ingredient, semaglutide.
